September 23, 2025

6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

How can architects shape inventive models of property ownership to make housing more equitable, inclusive, and vibrant? This conversation explores the intersection of architecture, law, and community activism through innovative approaches to housing.

Janette Kim, professor at California College of the Arts, will share work from her forthcoming book Property Playbook, which highlights how community-based activists across the U.S. are co-opting property law to redistribute wealth, sustain cultural continuity, and foster environmental reciprocity.

Joining her are Alice Armstrong and Ashton Hamm of the worker-owned firm uxo architects, who will present their designs with community land trusts, cooperative housing, and clients pursuing development models that prioritize community benefit.

Moderated by Keith Krumwiede, Dean of Architecture at CCA, this lively discussion is essential for anyone interested in housing justice, alternative property systems, and the role of architects in driving systemic change.

This program is presented by the Center for Architecture + Design and the California College of the Arts Architecture Division as part of the Architecture + the City Festival. This is the fourth in a series of events on property ownership organized by the Urban Works Agency at CCA.
